In this article, we take a look at the underlying drivers of the mass protest movement in Algeria which has resulted in president Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepping down from office. While the political elite has taken initial steps to appease protester grievances, the disaffected public faces a number of obstacles in terms of meaningfully changing Algeria’s underlying power structures.

In this article, we discuss how the use of such channels by political camps to spur public support – and divide opponents – will likely result in further cases of politically motivated violence.

The far-left ELN militant group has already targeted Colombia’s state-owned oil company’s pipeline infrastructure in multiple bombing attacks in 2019. In this article, we assess the nature and impact of these attacks, including the associated threat to multinational oil firm assets and personnel.
