In this month’s Global Risk bulletin, we cover the mass protest movement in Algeria, the impact of social media on the upcoming Indian elections and the persistent militant threat to energy infrastructure in Colombia.

Algeria

Le Pouvoir's sacrifice: steering change to preserve continuity in Algeria

In this article, we take a look at the underlying drivers of the mass protest movement in Algeria which has resulted in president Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepping down from office. While the political elite has taken initial steps to appease protester grievances, the disaffected public faces a number of obstacles in terms of meaningfully changing Algeria’s underlying power structures.

INdia

Anti-social media: politically motivated violence and the spread of misinformation in the 2019 Indian election

Social media platforms and online chat forums in India have been linked to numerous cases of murder and public lynching. In this article, we discuss how the use of such channels by political camps to spur public support – and divide opponents – will likely result in further cases of politically motivated violence.

Columbia

Pipeline politics: threats to Colombia's energy infrastructure
